Learning to deal with all our emotions from Inside Out
Shutting yourself off from all of your feelings isn’t always the answer. Don’t forget to take the time to sit back and reflect on all of your emotions.
Sometimes, we think the solution to our sadness is choosing not to acknowledge it when in reality, that can hurt us more than help us.
In the new Pixar film Inside Out, Riley does her best to keep a brave face for her parents, after moving from her childhood home. Thanks to her emotion, Joy, she’s able to do so.
Feeling all emotions
Joy’s main concern is keeping Riley happy, even if that means keeping her from feeling all of her emotions. She devotes so much time into doing so, it results in total disaster, throwing Riley into a whirlwind of emotions.
Ultimately, it causes Riley to fall into a short depression, unable to feel anything at all.
Joy failed to realise, in order for Riley to be happy, she must feel one every emotion, including Sadness.
Pressure to be happy
Suppressing your feelings to stay strong for others is a thoughtful gesture, but it can leave us feeling weaker in the end. Many of us make the mistake of thinking feeling sad isn’t good for us.
Just like Joy did, we neglect to acknowledge how therapeutic feeling sad can be for us.
Taking the time to get those feelings off of your chest can help you feel a million times better. There are plenty of ways you can go about dealing with that grief.
Learning to deal
Find support in family and friends. Don’t be afraid to go to someone you trust about how you’re feeling. Often, they can offer some kind words to help pull you through.
Life isn’t always full of happy situations and sometimes you have to take the good with the bad. Just remember, it doesn’t have to stay that way.
