Tom Daley talks about having a male partner

Olympic diver Tom DaleyThe Olympic diver Tom Daley has posted a YouTube video where he talks about his relationship with a man.

In the video he talks about having dated girls, and that he still fancies them. But, he says that right now he’s in a serious relationship with a guy and he “couldn’t be happier”.

Sexuality should be your own

Your sexuality shouldn’t be anyone’s business but your own. In the video Tom states that “in an ideal world I wouldn’t be doing this video because it shouldn’t matter.”

Unfortunately in the real world, people are very quick to label and maybe even judge. Which is why he decided to release this video rather than discuss his relationship in an interview – he didn’t want his truth to be twisted into something else.

Coming out

This should go for the rest of us too. No matter what walk of life you’re from, coming to terms with your sexuality and coming out can be difficult.

Telling people you’re gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender isn’t always easy and if you have a choice in the matter it’s important to do it your own way and to wait until you’re ready.

Getting help

Tom said that while his family had “mixed opinions” about it, his mum is very supportive. He says his dad (who passed away in 2011) just wanted him to be happy, so he’s sure he would have been OK with it.

While Tom was fortunate to have support at home, not everyone’s so lucky. However if you feel you do need support or information, BeLonG To are an organisation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender people aged 14 to 23 years-old.
