Embracing a beautiful body

This short by Michelle Duong explores our idea of ‘beauty’ and the importance of a positive body image. It was second runner up in the 2013 Inspire a Generation film competition.

Embracing a beautiful body transcript:

Body image is a topic we are all familiar with. Typing the words body image into Google returns over one billion searches.

We’re surrounded by images of what the perfect body should be. Some girls are concerned about their height, whether they’re too petite or too tall.

It shouldn’t make us insecure, because what you see as your worst asset, others find desirable. It’s just like hair can also be a menace, because it’s hard to maintain. Worrying about breast sizes is no stranger to us. Many women want bigger breasts to feel more feminine, however it can be a nuisance to others.

Beauty companies turn over billions each year. We have so many options, it’s no wonder we’re never happy with our image.

Body image is not exclusive to women, men are affected too. Some men are hairy while others are bigger built. Hair loss is inevitable for some, and there are men who feel more comfortable with a full head of hair.

You should not let it impair your confidence, because confidence is something that cannot be disguised with a full head of hair, muscular body or your breast size. It’s perfectly OK to want to look good, but feeling embarrassed or unhappy is not healthy.

Talking to a friend, family member or a professional can help to release any demons you have bottled up. Eating healthier and exercising can help to boost your mood, even getting a new haircut or changing your wardrobe is cleansing.
