Mental fitness

While we all know what we should be doing to stay physically fit, not all of us are sure about what being mentally fit means. Being mentally fit helps us deal with what life throws at us.

Youth Mental Health Ireland Mental FitnessWe asked some parents of young people aged 13 to 17 years-old in Ireland what springs to mind when they think about a young person being mentally fit.

They suggested:

  • Self-confidence
  • Commitment and ability to set goals
  • Motivation
  • Positive attitude and mindset
  • Ability to identify and deal with his/her emotions
  • Manages stress and anxiety well
  • Sense of responsibility
  • Being able to ask for help
  • Adaptable to different situations.

Just as important

Mental fitness is just as important as physical health and shouldn’t be neglected. We need to pay attention to young people’s emotional needs, just as we do their physical needs.
