Helping you get through tough times

Porn vs real life

Porn is a big business. While you may think porn can be harmless at a glance, there have been many studies into the effects of long term and frequent viewing.

x-ratedA common concern is that it distorts viewers’ perceptions of reality.

Pornography can leave viewers with unrealistic expectations of what sex should be like, how their partners should be and their own performance.

Here, we look at some of the unrealistic expectations people might get from watching porn and get a better insight on to what to really expect.

In porn everyone orgasms

People have ravenous sexual appetites and experience multiple screaming orgasms according to porn. Real sex doesn’t come with any satisfaction guarantees.

Some women for example, can find it difficult to orgasm from penetration alone and men can find it difficult to maintain an erection if they’re tired or stressed.

Remind yourself of the this and that for porn stars it’s a job to have sex and to make it look good. For the rest of us, it’s something we do when we’re in the mood.

Sex can last for ages

Porn stars often use performance enhancing pills to last longer. Editing can also create the illusion of marathon sex sessions.

Some men don’t realise this and feel they are under performing, when in fact, a North American study found that 3-7 minutes of penetration is average, with longer being rare.

Expecting playboy bodies

Just like other actors, porn stars are selected for a reason. The women are bustier, the men are ripped, and both have larger than normal sexual assets. This can lead to the rest of us believing  we are incapable of satisfying our partners or are not sexy enough.

People vary in their appearances and sexual preferences and personality and chemistry play a vital role in sexual relationships.

Easily turned on

From a diet of porn it can be easy to think that people are turned on really easily. The reality is it’s not that simple

Thanks to smartphones, porn is available anytime and anywhere. But in real life it can take time to earn someone’s trust and discover what turns them on. Some people need more time than others, and it’s important to be respectful of that.

Happy endings

A typical porn scene will have a “happy ending”. Unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are potential risks of having sex, especially when condoms are not used (which is the case in most porn). There can also be emotional consequences.

The sex you view in porn is superficial, but in reality, it involves real feelings. Using protection and having respectful conversations about sex are the best ways to make sure everyone is happy.
