Working things out yourself
If you’re going through a hard time, you might want to think about it in your own head before talking to someone else. Maybe you don’t know how you feel yet, or maybe you think it’s too soon to discuss what’s happening. That’s ok.
Some tips on working things out yourself:
Write it down – if your feelings are muddled, throw them down on a sheet of paper. Seeing your thoughts written out can help to clarify how you feel. Maybe the situation isn’t as complicated as you thought, or you might think of something you hadn’t realised before.
Get some distance – if you’re going around in circles, take a break from your thoughts. Read a book, watch TV or have a chat. You’ll go back to figuring things out with a clearer head.
- Be nice to yourself – if you’re going through a hard time, the last thing you need is negativity. Thinking positively about yourself is a great starting point for working things out. Check self-talk for more.
- Don’t be a hero – if you’re getting too stressed, it could be time to reach out. Working things through on your own sometimes seems easier, but it’s not always that simple. Don’t be ashamed to ask for help dealing with things. Sometimes we all need support from family and friends.
Thinking things through yourself can help you make sense of what’s going on in your head. But even if you feel better, think about confiding in someone you trust. It never hurts to get a second opinion and sometimes just talking about something out loud can be a relief. The people you trust will want to help you out.
