4 tips for New Years' resolutions that are good for your Mental Health
A lot of New Year's Resolutions are negative (don't smoke, don't eat sweets, etc). This promotes negative thinking, and can promote a negative self image since you begin with the idea that you're doing something wrong, and your resolution is about not doing it any more. Enter the ancient and mysterious art of goal-setting.
In general, being positive is better for your mental health. So from a MH point of view...
What makes a good New Year's Resolution?
- Be specific: Resolutions like "get fit" are vague and hard to measure. Instead, "ride my bicycle twice a week" is clear, and it's easy. Remember, exercise is great for your mental health.
- Keep it small: "Run a mini marathon" is grand if you're a serious runner, but if you're just starting out at something, keep it small. It's important to manage expectations, so running for 30 minutes every weekend might be a better place to start.
- Be positive: If you resolve to "spend less time on my computer" you're starting out on a negative. Instead, ask why you want to cut out the bad habit. Is it so you'll stay in touch better with friends? Or do you just want to get out of the house more? Instead of resolving to cut down on screen time, resolve to DO something that will take you away. Take a class, join a club, whatever!
- Check it: If you stick to your resolution one day, keep track of it! Check it off in your calendar, or do something to mark it. Don't pressure yourself to be perfect, and be sure to give yourself recognition when you do stick to it.
