Our team is small, productive, and laughs a lot. Here’s who we are, and what we do.

Derek ChambersDerek Chambers


Derek began his career in the role of research sociologist as part of a multi-disciplinary team in Ireland’s National Suicide Research Foundation in 1996 before taking up a research post with the Health Service Executive in 1999. While working for the HSE he was lead author of Ireland’s national suicide prevention strategy. This led to the establishment of the HSE National Office for Suicide Prevention which Derek joined as Senior Researcher and Deputy Head. Derek left the HSE NOSP in 2009 to become of Director of Programmes and Policy with He has an MA (Hons.) in Sociology from UCC and is currently completing a doctorate in social science, also in UCC.

Fenella MurphyFenella Murphy

Research and Evaluation Officer

Fenella joined in August 2010. She is a graduate of UCC’S MA Economics programme, during which she specialised in health economics and conducted research into mental health services in Ireland. Fenella previously worked with the Health Research Group in the University of Surrey as a research health economist. With, she now works on implementing our research and evaluation plan and providing research support to the team.

Naoise KavanaghNaoise Kavanagh

Head of Digital and Communications

Naoise joined youth mental health organisation ReachOut Ireland six years ago and in that time has managed all online developments ( and to name a few), online marketing, social media, the overall communications strategy and app development. She has been working in digital media for over twelve years in digital project management, content strategy and development and online marketing, mostly in the not-for-profit sector. With an undergrad in Journalism, an MSc in Digital Marketing and currently studying an MSc in Cyberpsychology, Naoise is interested in how technology is changing behaviour and how it can be used for good.

Roisin Doolan

Youth Engagement Officer

Roisin is passionate about young people and mental health. After studying Health Promotion in WIT she travelled to Australia in search of work. While interning with Australia she landed a full-time role as Online Community Co-ordinator as part of the Youth Involvement team. After two years there she relocated back to Ireland where she joined the Irish team in September 2011. Roisin works with the team to make the best it possibly can be and to keep young people at the centre of everything we do. Roisin loves sunshine, is obsessed with stationary and sometimes has an Australian accent.

Our board

Our board consists of people from a variety of backgrounds including (but not limited to) youth mental health, technology and corporate governance. 

Dr. Helen KeeleyDr. Helen Keely

Helen is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist with the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), for HSE South (North Cork), and was previously Deputy Director of the National Suicide Research Foundation. She’s a qualified medical doctor (University College Cork) and child Psychiatrist (Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust, London). She is also a Fellow of the Irish Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists.


Eamon LeonardEamon Leonard (Chairman)

Eamon is a founder, an advisor to start-ups, an angel investor, and a tech community organiser. Based in Ireland, he sold his company, Orchestra (a Platform-as-a-Service), to Engine Yard Inc. in 2011. There, he held the roles of VP Engineering and VP Developer Relations until August 2014. He is currently in the process of founding a distillery, and will continue to invest in startup teams, products and opportunities.


Rhys RuddockRhys Ruddock

A professional rugby union player, Rhys currently plays with UCD and Leinster. Already interested in using his position to further good causes, joining was a good fit.



Dr. Colin HuntDr. Colin Hunt (ex-chairman and board member)

Colin was the Managing Director of Macquarie Capital Ireland when he was the chairman of ReachOut Ireland. Previous roles include Research Director at Goodbody Stockbrokers, Special Advisor at the departments of  Finance and Transport, and Head of Trading Research at Bank of Ireland Treasury. He is a member of the Glasnevin Trust, and was previously a non-executive director at Aer Lingus, a member of the National Economic and Social Council and chaired the National Review of Higher Education Strategy. A native of Waterford, he has BComm and MEconSc degrees from University College Cork and a PhD from Trinity College Dublin.
