Getting through tough times makes us stronger
Kanye West may have lost the plot when it comes to dental care, but it seems some of his lyrics ring true for mental health care. In his song Stronger, Kanye sings: “n- n-now that don’t kill me, can only make me stronger…” The origin for these famous lyrics goes all the way back to the German Philosopher Nietzsche in the mid 1800’s, but a recent study has got us re-examining these wise old words. The study asked a national sample of people to report all the adverse events or tough times they have experienced in their lives and also asked them about their current mental health and well being. The researchers found that people who experienced some adverse events reported better mental health and well-being than people with a high history of adversity i.e. tough times or those with no history of adversity. So apparently a little bit of adversity is good for us, but not too much or too little.
At some point in our lives, everyone will go through a tough time of some kind. Unfortunately, no one is able to choose how much of a tough time they go through, but hope springs eternal, and by simply getting through that tough time, it may make us a stronger person, more resilient and better able to deal with what life has in store for us next.
